Tennis for Little Ones – Ages 3 to 5
Starting tennis young is one of the best things you can do for your child’s development. Our Preschool Hot Shots program is designed specifically for children aged 3 to 5, running as a morning session that fits neatly into the preschool routine.
Using Tennis Australia’s Red Ball program, everything about these sessions is scaled to suit little players – smaller courts, lower nets, lighter racquets, and a soft red ball that doesn’t bounce too high or too fast. It’s designed so that kids can actually hit it, chase it, and feel like they’re playing tennis from day one.
Classes are fun, active, and full of games and movement. At this age, it’s not about being perfect – it’s about getting kids moving, building coordination, and falling in love with the sport.
The Red Ball stage is the very first step in the Tennis Australia Hot Shots pathway. It’s made for beginners, particularly pre-school aged children who are just starting out.
The red ball is softer and larger than a standard tennis ball, and doesn’t bounce nearly as high – making it much easier for young kids to follow, hit, and rally with. The court size is smaller too, so kids aren’t running a marathon to reach the ball.
It’s a perfect introduction to the sport, and a great foundation for when they’re ready to move up to the Orange Ball stage as they get older.
The early years are a critical time for developing fine motor skills, and tennis is one of the best sports for it. Every session helps build:
Hand-eye coordination, balance and agility, listening and following instructions, spatial awareness and movement, social skills and confidence in a group setting.
And honestly – kids this age just love it. Running around, hitting balls, playing games with other kids their own age. It’s a great way to start the week.
Our Preschool Hot Shots sessions run on weekday mornings to suit families with pre-school aged children. Days and times vary by term and venue, so get in touch and we’ll point you in the right direction.
